Welcome!

12/27/09 | by Slightly [mail] | Categories: Reading now

Welcome to Slightly Lively’s Book Club, 2010 edition! For the month of January, I’d like for us to read Too Much Happiness by Alice Munro.

“She hated to hear the word ‘escape’ used about fiction. She might have argued, not just playfully, that it was real life that was the escape. But this was too important to argue about.” Taken from a story called “Free Radicals,” this line may be the best way to think about the lives unfolding in Alice Munro’s Too Much Happiness. Real life assaults her central characters rather brutally–in the forms of murder and madness, death, divorce, and all manner of deceptions–but they respond with a poise and clarity of thought that’s disarming–sometimes, even nonchalant–when you consider their circumstances. Her women move through life, wearing their scars but not so much wearied by them, profoundly intelligent, but also inordinately tender and thoughtful. There’s more fact than fiction to these stories, rich in quiet, precise details that make for a beautiful, bewildering read. -Anne Bartholomew (Amazon)

10 short stories, 31 days to read them.

I’ll post some questions for discussion in the next few days/weeks but don’t restrain your comments to those topics!
Also there will be a giveaway every month, related to the book we’re reading. To participate in the giveaway, just leave at least one comment per book.
I look forward to your suggestions on what to read in the upcoming months! Feel free to leave a comment and introduce yourself so we can all get to know each other.

If you have any questions or suggestions to make the book club awesome, let me know!

Aqui hay un articulo en castellano sobre el libro. Si quieres participar en el club pero no lees en ingles, lee “Secretos a Voces” de Alice Munro y cuentanos lo que te parece.

I love this idea and I'm totally in! Having an e-book club is much better than meeting with your neighbors - with participants all over the world we're not all fighting for the same book at the local library! ;)

Ya empecé a leer - secretos a voces- , de momento lo encuentro interesante, pero como estoy en el principio, aún no puedo dar mi opinión.

Still # 31 waiting for the library book...you think I'll really, REALLY like it?, because I'm thnking on buying it...by the way Shangai girls was good but it was open ended...I hate open endings, but it's way open, so open that I turned the page for more and it was done!! for a second I thought it was a missprint, I read the "last page " 3 times to understand that it really was the end...she could have finished it!! it's not so hard ,or is it? you start writing a book and then you FINISH it!!Me cachis!!OK,ok, I know....I have to let it go.

I've only read the first 2 short stories of the book.
Almu, the first one will break your heart.
The second one has a time transition over a dinner table that left me in awe. I'm still in awe. The way it's written is unbelievable. Like a freakin' sunrise.

If you can't decide if you wanna buy it or not, you might wanna do some more research on it.
Maybe they can request it for you from another library. I know the Provo library used to trade with Orem's all the time, if you asked them to.

I bought the book because everything I read about it was great. I do hope you enjoy it, but I can't promise you'll love it. I don't know. I'm starting the third short story tonight.

I'm really sorry about the unfinished book. I have a hard time with books like that. I want the author to give me some sense of closure, otherwise I walk around feeling lost for days and can't shake the story off of mind.
